Learn to read with Dog in the Fog by Sue Graves
This wonderful book is designed to help the development of literacy skills in children learning to read and spell three letter words, or CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words.
The story is about a plump dog called Pog whose owner, Mr Mog tells he has to get fit. So Pog decides to go for a jog but in the fog it's ever so hard and he bumps in to a log.
Are you beginning to get the idea? Lots of CVC rhyming words!
Pog then bumps in to a hog and falls in to a smelly bog. Giving up on his attempts to get fit, Pog returns home, all smelly and gets a bath from his owner!
The characters in the drawings are very large. Pog appeals to children, who find him quite funny in his sweatband ready for exercise.
This is quite a large book and is unusual in it's layout. Half of it contains the book part, the other half (which forms the back, thicker card) shows the 8 main CVC rhyming words from the story alongside pictures of the items / things. At the bottom of this section there is a wheel turning with a large 'og' shown. As the wheel is turned the word can be changed to show words such as log, dog, Pog, jog, fog etc... In other words it's an interactive letter wheel!
The text is very large and simple enough for emergent readers to sound out the 3 letter words or join in from memory with the other words.
There are quite a few speech bubbles used from Pog and some of the other characters in the story. A good introduction to speech bubbles.
This book is ideal for any child who is ready for sounding out CVC words (consonant - vowel - consonant) but it can also be enjoyed by pre-readers.
It is a great educational resource:
- encourages rhyme recognition.
- identify onset and rime of 3 letter words.
- Sounding out skills can be encouraged. +
- Develops early reading skills.
